Culture and breeding of landscape plants

In the Station, several groups of landscape plants are collected, such as Japanese camellia, Rhododendron, flowering lotus and lawn grass. Among them, the collection of flowering lotus is important and famous because it covers most of Japanese hortivarieties including "Ohga Lotus". Original individual of "Ooga Lotus" germinated from a seed excavated from sediment that was estimated to be 2000 years old. Today we have about 250 or more hortivarieties of flowering lotus including Chinese, Korean, West Asian, South Asian and North American ones. We also try to breed new lotus varieties that has new and useful characteristics.
